How Long Does It Take to Make a Bespoke Engagement Ring?

Why Does a Bespoke Engagement Ring Take Time?

One of the questions we're asked most often is, "Why does a bespoke engagement ring take so much longer than buying one ready-made?" , so we thought we would give you an insight into the timeline of creating a bespoke engagement ring with an independent jewellery designer.

Unlike an off-the-shelf engagement ring, a bespoke design is created entirely around you. Every commission begins with a conversation, allowing us to understand not only the style of ring you're looking for, but also the story behind it. We take time to get to know you, your partner, your lifestyle and the moments you're celebrating so that every design decision feels considered and personal.

From there, every stage is completed with care. We source diamonds and gemstones specifically for your design, develop sketches and CAD models, refine proportions, hand-finish each piece and carefully set every stone. Throughout the process, you'll have opportunities to review the design, make adjustments and ensure every detail feels exactly right before your ring is made.

At ANUKA, we see the design journey as just as important as the finished ring itself. Creating a bespoke engagement ring is a collaborative experience, allowing you to become part of the story from the very beginning. The result is not simply a ring, but a piece created with intention, craftsmanship and longevity in mind, one that is designed to be worn every day and eventually passed down as a modern-day heirloom.

The Bespoke Engagement Ring Timeline

Every bespoke engagement ring follows its own unique journey, but as a guide we typically recommend allowing 6–14 weeks from your initial consultation to collecting your finished ring. While every commission is different, here's what you can expect throughout the process.

Week 1: Initial Consultation

Every bespoke journey begins with a one-to-one consultation with Francesca. This is an opportunity to get to know you, understand your ideas and learn about the person the ring is being designed for.

We'll discuss your budget, preferred styles, lifestyle, precious metals and diamond shapes, as well as any other details you'd like to incorporate. Whether you arrive with a clear vision or don't know where to begin, this conversation lays the foundation for the entire design.

Weeks 2–3: Design Development

Following our consultation, we'll begin translating your ideas into 3-6 concepts.

Using everything we've discussed, we'll create mood boards and develop initial sketches that reflect your vision. This collaborative stage allows us to refine proportions, discuss different design directions and ensure the ring feels completely personal before moving forward.

Once a preferred design has been chosen, we'll source the diamond or coloured gemstone specifically for your commission. Every stone is carefully selected to suit both your design and budget. As this detail is so important, we will always invite you to view the stones before choosing the right one to fit the design.

Weeks 3–5: CAD Design

After the design development stage, your ring is then developed into a detailed CAD model, allowing every measurement, setting and proportion to be refined before production begins.

This stage ensures every element works beautifully together, creating a ring that is both visually balanced and practical for everyday wear.

Weeks 6–8: Visualisation & Final Approval

Before your ring is handcrafted, you'll have the opportunity to see your design come to life.

We'll invite you to view your chosen diamonds or gemstones alongside a resin model of your ring, giving you a realistic impression of its scale and proportions. If there are any final refinements you'd like to make, this is the perfect opportunity to adjust small details before giving final approval.

Taking time at this stage means you can move into production with complete confidence, knowing every aspect of the design feels exactly right.

Weeks 9–13: Craftsmanship & Finishing

With the design approved, your engagement ring is ready to be made.

The ring is cast in your chosen precious metal before being carefully prepared by hand. Your diamonds or gemstones are expertly set, the piece is hallmarked and every surface is meticulously polished.

This is where traditional craftsmanship takes centre stage, transforming a design into a piece of jewellery that will be worn and treasured for a lifetime.

Week 14: Collection

Your finished engagement ring is ready to collect or be sent to you by post, beautifully presented and ready for the proposal you've been planning. If any minor size adjustments are needed after the proposal, we'll happily guide you through the resizing process to ensure the perfect fit.

What Can Affect the Timeline?

While most bespoke engagement rings are typically completed within our recommended timeframe, there are several factors that can influence how long the process takes.

One of the biggest considerations is gemstone sourcing. If you're searching for a particularly rare diamond, an unusual cut or a unique coloured gemstone such as a teal sapphire, it can naturally take longer to source the perfect stone.

The design process itself also benefits from time. Many clients enjoy exploring different ideas before settling on a final design, and it's not uncommon for sketches or CAD models to be refined as the project develops. These conversations are an important part of creating a ring that feels truly personal, and we never want anyone to feel rushed into making a decision.

Seasonality can also influence lead times. Christmas proposals, the summer wedding season and other popular engagement periods are naturally busier, so beginning your bespoke journey early is always recommended.

Additional design elements such as hand engraving, intricate settings or incorporating inherited diamonds and sentimental jewellery through remodelling can also extend the process slightly. These details require additional attention to detail but often become some of the most meaningful parts of the finished piece.

Ultimately, every bespoke engagement ring is different. Our priority is never to complete a ring as quickly as possible, but to create something that you'll treasure.

Can You Create a Bespoke Engagement Ring Faster?

If the design is relatively simple and your chosen diamond or gemstone is immediately available, it may be possible to shorten the production timeline slightly. However, we never compromise on craftsmanship simply to meet a deadline.

As an independent jewellery designer, every bespoke commission receives the time and attention it deserves. From thoughtful design consultations to sourcing exceptional stones and carefully handcrafting each ring, every stage is completed with care to ensure the finished piece meets the highest standard.

If you're working to a particularly tight timescale, we may recommend exploring our ready-to-wear engagement ring collection, where shorter lead times are possible without compromising on quality.

Alternatively, many couples choose to propose with a placeholder ring before returning together to create a bespoke engagement ring. This allows the proposal itself to remain a surprise while giving you both the opportunity to enjoy the design process together and create a ring that feels completely personal.

Is Bespoke Worth the Wait?

Working directly with the designer gives you a level of involvement that simply isn't possible when purchasing a ready-made ring. You'll gain insight into every stage of the process, from the first conversation and design sketches through to gemstone selection and the final handcrafted piece. Every decision is made with intention, ensuring the ring reflects not only your partner's style but also your story together.

Bespoke also allows you to include meaningful details that make your ring entirely personal to you. Whether that's incorporating inherited diamonds, choosing a significant gemstone, engraving a hidden message or designing a setting that reflects your partner's lifestyle, these personal touches transform an engagement ring into something far more meaningful than an off-the-shelf design.

At ANUKA, we create jewellery with the future in mind. Rather than designing pieces that follow short-lived trends, we create contemporary engagement rings that are timeless in both style and craftsmanship. They are designed to celebrate one of life's most important milestones today, while becoming modern-day heirlooms that can one day be passed on to future generations.

Because the most meaningful jewellery isn't simply made - it is thoughtfully created, with you at the heart of every decision.
