What Is Bespoke Jewellery?

What Can You Have Made Through a Bespoke Jewellery Service?

One of the most exciting things about bespoke jewellery is the freedom to create something that doesn't already exist. Your design can begin with a clear idea, a particular gemstone, a piece of inherited jewellery or simply a feeling you want to capture.

Every project is different. Some clients arrive knowing exactly what they want, while others need help discovering what feels right. You don't need to know exactly what you want before beginning; part of the bespoke process is exploring the possibilities together.

At ANUKA, bespoke projects can include:

  • Bespoke engagement rings: A ring designed around your preferred diamond or gemstone, setting, metal and style.
  • Bespoke wedding rings: Wedding bands tailored to your engagement ring, personal preferences or shared story.
  • Anniversary and milestone jewellery: A ring, necklace or other meaningful piece to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or significant life event.
  • Remodelled heirloom jewellery: Reworking inherited rings, diamonds and gemstones into something more suited to your style while retaining their sentimental connection.
  • Bespoke necklaces and pendants: Jewellery designed around a meaningful symbol, a birthstone, a personal motif or a stone you already own.

Is Bespoke Jewellery Worth It?

Bespoke jewellery is particularly worthwhile when you want a piece to feel personal in a way that a ready-made design may not. It gives you the opportunity to make considered choices about the design, materials and details, rather than finding a piece that comes close to what you imagined.

For an engagement ring, that might mean finding the right balance of diamond shape, setting and everyday practicality. For a milestone gift, it could be incorporating a birthstone or engraving that represents someone important. For inherited jewellery, it may mean preserving a family diamond while creating a design that feels entirely your own.

Bespoke jewellery also allows you to consider the piece as a whole. How will it feel to wear? Will it sit comfortably alongside other jewellery? Can it accommodate an existing gemstone? What details will make it meaningful to you?

At ANUKA, we see bespoke jewellery as an opportunity to create modern heirlooms: pieces that are personal from the beginning and have the potential to gather meaning over time.

Bespoke isn't necessarily the right choice for everyone. If you find a piece in a collection that feels perfect as it is, there may be no need to start from scratch. But when the details matter, bespoke design offers a level of personal involvement that makes the experience special.

How Does the Bespoke Jewellery Process Work?

The bespoke process is collaborative, working with Francesca, you are part of every step. We guide you through the decisions, explain the options available and help turn your initial ideas into a considered design.

While every project is different, the process follows these stages.

1. The Initial Consultation

We begin by getting to know you and understanding what you're hoping to create. You might bring inspiration images, an existing piece of jewellery or a gemstone you'd like to use. Equally, you might simply have an occasion to celebrate and want to explore ideas.

We'll discuss your style, preferences, budget and any practical considerations that could influence the design.

2. Developing the Design

Once we understand your ideas, we begin exploring the design. This may involve considering different silhouettes, gemstone shapes, settings, proportions and metals, refining the details until the design feels right.

3. Selecting Gemstones and Materials

If your design includes gemstones, we can explore suitable options in line with your preferences and budget. If you have inherited diamonds or gemstones, we'll consider whether they are suitable for the proposed design. The choice of metal is another important part of the process, influencing the appearance, feel and character of the finished piece.

4. Finalising the Design

Once a design has been finalised, once we have refined the design, we offer an online 360 interactive render of your piece. From stone settings to proportions, this helps you to visualise your new piece from all angles. As well as this, we also provide a 3D resin model for you to try on in our showroom. This is an exciting part of the process as it gives you a glimpse of what your new piece will look like.

This stage gives us the opportunity to review the details together and ensure the design is ready to move forward.

5. Making Your Jewellery

Once the design is approved, your jewellery is made with care and attention to detail. Every piece of ANUKA bespoke jewellery is consciously handcrafted in the UK using Fairmined gold, recycled precious metals and responsibly sourced gemstones.

Using a combination of in-house and local craftspeople, each bespoke piece is thoughtfully handcrafted locally. We work closely with a trusted family-run workshop for casting, alongside specialist stone setters and engravers. All of our pieces are then assayed and hallmarked by the Birmingham Assay Office.

How Long Does Bespoke Jewellery Take to Make?

The time required depends on the complexity of the design, the availability of materials and the type of jewellery being made. At ANUKA, a guided timeline for bespoke commissions is around 10–14 weeks from the initial consultation to completion.

Sourcing a particular diamond or gemstone, developing a more intricate design or incorporating an inherited stone can all affect the schedule. The consultation and design stages also give you time to consider the options and make decisions with confidence.

If you're creating jewellery for a specific date, such as a proposal, anniversary or birthday, it's worth starting the conversation as early as possible. Bespoke jewellery is a collaborative process, and allowing enough time helps us give the design the attention it deserves.

If your timeline is shorter, we can discuss the options available. A piece from our [Signature Collection] or our made-to-order designs may be a suitable alternative, depending on your requirements.

How Much Does Bespoke Jewellery Cost?

The cost of bespoke jewellery depends on the design, materials and craftsmanship involved. There isn't one fixed price, because each piece is created around different requirements.

At ANUKA, we believe the design should work within a budget that feels comfortable for you. Sharing your budget at the beginning helps us explore suitable materials and design options, rather than developing something that doesn't meet your expectations.

Bespoke jewellery doesn't have to mean choosing the largest gemstone or the most elaborate design. Sometimes, a beautifully considered detail or a single meaningful stone is what makes a piece special.

The best starting point is a conversation about what you're hoping to create and what you'd like to spend.

The main factors that influence the cost include:

  • The metal: Your choice of gold, including the type and carat, affects the overall price.
  • The gemstones: The type, size, quality and number of stones can make a significant difference.
  • The design: More intricate designs or settings may require additional time and specialist work.
  • Existing jewellery: If you have inherited gemstones or gold, these may be suitable for use in a new design, depending on their condition and the requirements of the project.
  • Engraving and personal details: Bespoke engraving, family crests and other individual elements may influence the final cost.

Is Bespoke Jewellery Better Than Ready-Made Jewellery?

Neither is inherently better; the right choice depends on what matters most to you.

Ready-made jewellery allows you to choose a finished design, which can be ideal if you find something you love or need a piece within a shorter timeframe. It can also be a helpful starting point if you're still discovering your personal style.

Bespoke jewellery gives you more involvement in the design. You can tailor the proportions, choose the materials, incorporate meaningful details and, in some cases, work with gemstones you already own.

The choice doesn't have to be between a completely new design and a finished piece. Depending on the jewellery and the changes you'd like to make, there may be a way to bring elements of both together, such as personalising our Signature Collection.

Can You Remodel Existing Jewellery into Something New?

Redesigning jewellery offers a way to transform a piece you already own into something that better suits your style or the life you're living now.

Perhaps you have inherited a ring that you would love to wear but find too traditional. You may have a collection of family jewellery containing gemstones you'd like to bring together in a new design, or a piece that holds sentimental value but no longer feels like you.

Depending on the original materials and the design you have in mind, remodelling might involve resetting a diamond, adapting a ring, incorporating gemstones into a new piece or reworking elements of an existing design.

Remodelling is not simply about changing how jewellery looks. It can be a way of keeping important memories close while allowing a piece to become part of your life again.

How Do You Choose a Bespoke Jewellery Designer?

Choosing a jeweller is about more than finding someone who can make a particular piece. It's about finding someone who understands your ideas, communicates clearly and can guide you through the decisions involved.

At ANUKA, we take a considered, personal approach to bespoke jewellery. We want each client to feel involved in the process and confident that the finished piece reflects their ideas, priorities and story.

When choosing a bespoke jewellery designer, consider the following:

  • Design approach: Look at their previous work to understand whether their aesthetic resonates with you.
  • Experience: Ask about their experience with the type of jewellery you want to create, particularly if it involves a specific setting, gemstone or inherited piece.
  • Materials and sourcing: Find out about the metals and gemstones they work with and the information available about their sourcing.
  • Communication: The process should give you opportunities to ask questions, discuss options and understand the decisions being made.
  • Timeline and budget: A clear discussion at the beginning helps establish realistic expectations for both.
  • Aftercare: Ask what support is available once the piece is complete, including any relevant care, maintenance or resizing arrangements.

FAQs

The terms are often used interchangeably. Both generally refer to jewellery created or adapted around an individual's preferences rather than simply selected as a finished design. The exact service offered varies between jewellers, so it's worth asking how the design and making process works.

No, not always but we always recommend looking around and finding some inspiration. You can begin with images, a particular gemstone, an occasion or simply a broad idea. We can help you explore styles, materials and design options before settling on a final direction.

It can be, but not always. The price depends on the design, materials, gemstones and craftsmanship involved. Sharing your budget at the beginning helps us suggest appropriate options and develop a design around your priorities.

The timeline depends on the project. At ANUKA, bespoke engagement rings typically take around 10-14 weeks, while other bespoke pieces may require different lead times. It is always best to discuss your deadline during the initial consultation.

Bespoke jewellery can celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, family milestones, new beginnings or personal achievements. It can also be created to preserve the sentimental value of inherited jewellery or to mark a meaningful moment in your life.

You can discuss using existing jewellery or gemstones as part of your design. Their suitability will depend on their condition, composition and the piece you want to create. We will advise on the options when assessing them.

At ANUKA, we use Fairmined and recycled gold with a considered approach to sourcing ethical gemstones. Each piece we design is made ethically using responsibly sourced materials.

While we will never copy a design, an existing piece can provide inspiration for a bespoke design. A consultation is a good opportunity to discuss what you like about a particular piece and how it might be adapted to suit you.

Yes. You can explore different diamond or gemstone shapes, settings, metals and design details. Depending on the design, you may also be able to incorporate engraving or an inherited stone to make the ring more personal.

We will explain the appropriate care for your piece and any relevant aftercare options. For rings in particular, we offer a complimentary first resize. We are always happy to offer other maintenance that may help keep your new jewellery in good condition.
