We are often asked why sustainable jewellery brands are more expensive, why the jewellery has a higher price point than larger brands and why consumers should invest at this higher price point.
Our response? Well, there isn’t a completely straightforward answer as there are a handful of good reasons that mean sustainable jewellery is more expensive.
The Materials
The quality and origin of the raw materials used to create the jewellery majorly affects the price point.
Take a Fairmined gold ring for example. A ring that's gold is fully traceable to its source, that supports mining for good and above all, ensures fair pay, gender equality, no child labour, safe working conditions and clean water supplies for the surrounding communities.
Compare this to a mass-produced piece of jewellery, that most likely has no proof of origin and the process and environment taken to create it.
This is what you’re paying for. Assurance in the journey and in the impact on our planet and the people.
The Process
A key priority to a sustainable jewellery brand is that every step of the process is ethical and considered.
It takes many hands to make one single piece of jewellery and as an ethical jewellery brand, we are proud of the people we partner with at each stage of the supply chain, only working with those who we trust and believe in and who can provide certification of their high ethics, values and standards.
It’s these high ethics, values and standards that raise the price point. Ensuring that we support diversity in our supply chain and give preference to suppliers owned by or supporting disadvantaged or underrepresented people.
Every item of jewellery at ANUKA is handcrafted in the U.K. Alongside our busy workshop, we work together with the very best skilled crafts-people at different stages of the making process, from lost wax casting, to stone setters and our Fairmined gold platers.

How We Make Our Jewellery Collections
Small Scale Production
By making to order and producing in smaller quantities, the very highest quality is assured. However, this is another factor that makes costs more expensive as often with a higher volume order you can negotiate on price whereas with smaller-scale production you are more likely to pay a premium and have less negotiating power.
Small scale production means you are only producing what you need, limiting time, resources and waste.
So Much More Than Jewellery
Sustainable jewellery is so much more than jewellery. You are investing in a positive impact, a positive legacy and future on an industry which needs it. Each piece of ethical jewellery has a story, before it's even reached the hands of its owner.
Not only can you be rest assured that your jewellery has been produced with the planet in mind, but you are also investing in the people behind the business.
At ANUKA, we are passionate about creating change and doing everything we can to create a better future for our planet. We’re B Corp Certified, a member of 1% For The Planet and work with Provenance to provide proof of our supply chain.
So, when you invest in sustainable jewellery, it is more expensive because you’re paying for so much more than the physical object. You’re paying for the efforts behind it.
